Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Chrystal Medical Limited is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 2022

Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations.

Chrystal Medical began collecting emissions data in accordance with the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) requirement for our financial year ending 31 December 2022. In accordance with these requirements, we have Scope 1, and this is our baseline.

Baseline year emissions: 1st January to 31st December

Emissions reduction targets

To continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following objectives. At present we don’t have a projection of total reduction but as an alternative we are focussing on interim targets to reduce our largest emission sources.

Carbon reduction & delivering ‘Net Zero’.

  • To monitor and reduce overall scope 2 & 3 emissions in CO2e per employee by 60% by 2030 from a base year of 2022.
  • To achieve ‘net zero’ for all emissions we can influence by 2040.

Waste Management

  • Overall aim to send zero waste to landfill by Q3 2025.
  • Achieved a 90% reduction in paper usage in 2023/24.
  • Liaised with our landlords to recycle 100% of all waste by Q2 2024.

Transport & Travel

  • All EV company car fleet since 2022
  • Cycle to work scheme introduced 2023.
  • Car share policy and incentives introduced Q1 2024 to reduce emissions generated by travel to work by 25%
  • Engaged with our suppliers to drive improvement in environmental impact of their services.
  • All business mileage claims limited to public transport/electric vehicles by Q4 2028.

Environmental Education and awareness

We are empowering our staff to be advocates and drive initiatives as to how they can improve the environment through their behaviours both in work and at home.

  • Introduction of staff training module to be completed by all by end Q1 2024.
  • Promotion of sustainability initiatives via LinkedIn & Instagram and sustainability champion introduced to influence staff and promote environmental initiatives and achievements.

Carbon Reduction Achievements

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2022 baseline.

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

  • Achieved ISO 14001 certification in April 2024
  • Working towards introduction of ISO 45001 Q1 2025.
  • All gas appliances removed from Chrystal offices.
  • Introduced sustainability focus group in 2023.
  • Recruitment policies amended to support ‘home working’ initiatives
  • 80% increase in the use of virtual meetings.
  • Salary Sacrifice Electric Vehicle scheme, including free home charging points, introduced for all for all company car drivers.
  • Salary sacrifice EV scheme rolled out to all employees.
  • Introduced alternative methods of working such as increased working from home and ‘hot desking’ where office attendance is required
  • Reduced car parking spaces by 20% in 2024 to encourage staff to use alternatives such as public transport, car sharing or cycle to work.
  • Offset our carbon usage by buying carbon credits for activities that support community development, protect eco systems or install efficient technology to reduce or remove emissions from the atmosphere.
  • Our office heating and ventilation system is controlled and, on a timer,

Carbon Reduction Projects:

  • Commit to measuring carbon footprint of business activities year on year to gain an understanding of pinch points and regularly be making efficient and direct improvements to reduce these emissions. Appointed Positive Planet to support with calculating baseline carbon footprint and reduction recommendations.

Completion Date - 2023

Scope 1,2,3

  • Create a Green Team to lead initiatives. This team has been made up of members from different departments to support the roll out of initiatives and management of data, this includes sharing and collaborating throughout the organisation.

Completion Date - 2023

Scope 1,2,3

  • We are investing in the skills, capability and resources to carry out virtual and hybrid engagement, reducing the need for our team and the people we support to travel to meeting and events. We have hybrid working and we consider hybrid or virtual meetings where possible balanced with the needs of our customers.

Completion Date - Ongoing

Scope1,2,3

  • Review and renew inefficient equipment (when at end of life), and actively consider the energy efficiency of equipment when new purchases are required (e.g. laptops, fridges, dishwashers). We have a renewal programme for older IT equipment for 2024. We repurpose old equipment where possible.

Completion Date - Ongoing

Scope Purchased Electricity

Reduction Plans

  • Ask the landlord to consider or report plans to implement options to improve the EPC rating of the building, such as improved glazing, insulation and/or adding heat & solar control reflective window sheets. If in the future we need to procure more office space we will prioritise those with no gas heating to maintain 0 stationary combustion emissions.

Completion Date - 2027

Scope Stationery, combustion, purchased electricity

  • Encourage the landlord at the office to procure a 100% renewable electricity tariff. This change will reduce market-based emissions (from chosen tariff) from the office (common areas) to 0 to CO2e.

Completion Date - 2030

Scope Purchased electricity

  • Total location-based electricity emissions - The Green Team will encourage behaviour change initiatives within the workplace for reduction of emissions, including clear messaging for turning off lights, monitors, computers, and other electrical appliances where appropriate.

Completion Date - Ongoing

Scope Purchased electricity

  • Ask the landlord to consider implementing energy efficiency measures to reduce the overall amount of electricity consumed by the building. They may consider optimising operational procedures and implementing energy management systems as in ISO 14001. Examples of reduction measures include upgrading lighting, introducing more sensor lighting, installing timers on sockets/equipment.

Completion Date - 2030

Scope Purchased electricity

  • Consider including questions in future homeworking surveys around employee’s homeworking environment to assess whether employees have gas heating or are on renewable energy tariffs at home. To support engagement with the above part of the Green Team’s initiatives should be driving wider employee engagement with the company's sustainability journey. This could include communicating the benefits of switching to a renewable home energy supplier.

Completion Date - 2025

Scope Homeworking

  • Review logistics partners/couriers and utilise our Sustainable Procurement Policy. Work with providers to gather their emissions data, and/or switch to lower-carbon providers. Prioritise purchasing from local suppliers to limit delivery mileage.

Completion Date - 2024-2030

Scope Upstream

  • Review our travel policy to encourage further sustainability and to support environmental impact of choices when travelling, staying in hotels and commuting. The priorities within this policy will support active travel and low emission travel options where appropriate. The organisation’s policy encourages the use of train travel for longer journeys as our preferred method of travel for longer journeys.

Completion Date - 2025

Scope Business travel, commuting

  • Review and enhance/improve existing company EV leasing scheme for employees in line with a review of the employee benefits system.

Completion date - 2025

Scope Business travel, commuting
